Varroa mites are one of the most feared pest to bees. They are the size of a pepper flake, dark red, round, and shiny. If you were the size of a bee a varroa mite would be the size of a dinner plate. The mite attaches onto the body of the bee and eats a hole through the exoskeleton of it. Eventually the mite falls off and dies but the hole in the bee is now exposed, making the bee more likely to get sick. The sickness can then spread to other bees or other bees will get mites of their own. If the mites aren’t dealt with the colony of bees will collapse.
There are many ways to treat for mites. Most are chemicals that are in a block form, you set these inside the hive and let the fumes of the chemicals kill off the mites, and other treatments are chemicals directly pored on the bees.
Both of those types of treatments are poison, poison that you are putting inside of a place that you are planning to get food out of. I personally don’t want poison in my food, do you want poison in your food? I would guess not, so that is why I don’t use these chemical treatments. My form of treating is called a Brood Break and it is a completely natural way to get rid of mites. If you are looking for honey that is more natural look no farther than here! I use no chemicals or treatments on my bees and my honey isn’t pasteurized. Go to the Honey Shop to place your order now!
